This week we were thrilled to have Alex from the University of Manitoba's WISE Kid-Netic Energy program come and run a workshop called "Open Heart Surgery". We got the chance to explore a pig's heart through dissection to learn all about the circulatory system. At first, some students were worried about the "ick" factor and whether or not they could make it through the workshop, but I am proud to say that everyone persevered! During our dissection, students learned first hand about the difference between cardiac muscle and smooth muscle, and explored the ventricles and the atriums. Students also compared the different sizes of the arteries and veins leading into the heart to the ones feeding the heart muscle.
Next week, we are going to try an engineering challenge where students have to design a tool that will help open up an artery that has been clogged by plaque. We have a bunch of curious and inventive students, so I am very much looking forward to their design!
