Edu Photo A Day Challenge

I am very excited to announce that our class has committed to participating in an innovative and collaborative project spearheaded by two amazing teachers here in Winnipeg!  The challenge is called, Edu Photo a Day, or #eduphotoaday.  Wait a minute, what is that number sign doing before those words, you ask?  Well, that indicates what is at the core of this challenge, Instagram and its hashtags.

Many people that are familiar with social media and emerging communicative technologies may already be familiar with the Instagram app available for smart phones and tablets.  For those of you who may not, Instagram is a photography app where users can take snapshots, apply filters (or not), and create a photographic diary.  My two good friends, Erin Malkoske and Jeff Hoeppner, from River East Transcona School Division, have created a challenge to promote collaboration and respectful use of social media between classrooms around the world.

These two teachers, and their respective classes (grades 1/2 and 4), have created a list of approximately 60 ideas/items that students are encouraged to represent through snapshots on Instagram.  These snapshots are to be labelled with the idea "hashtag", and the hashtag #eduphotoaday, so that they can be curated and made available through Instagram to participating classrooms around the globe.  Classrooms are then encouraged to use the snapshots as writing prompts in language arts activities.

To prepare for the challenge, we have created our own classroom Instagram account, @mswelbergensclass, and hope to link it up to our blog within the week.  We plan to use the 10 new classroom iPads recently purchased by Beaumont School (with the support of parent council), to participate in the challenge.  Interested in finding out more?  Check out the blog link   eduphotoaday.blogspot.ca  to learn more!
