All Ye Lubbers and Lass'

Congratulations to all of our grade 5/6 students and the fantastic job they did on this year's spring musical, Pirates. We had a terrific turn out this year and the music, costumes and performances were AMAZING!  Fine work!

Now with the musical over, we are into the final stretch of our school year.  There is a lot underway in 5/6 We this term, and hopefully we are not being to ambitious!

In Science, students are learning all about the engineering and design process through our work with the NASA Design Squad challenges.  Our goal is to get kids thinking about engineering as a career, and to promote the development of teamwork, collaboration and problem solving skills to create prototypes of space vehicles.  So far our teams have completed 2 of 4 challenges and hope to have time to complete a couple of bonus challenges later on in June!

In Social Studies, students are beginning work on developing an essential question and area of focus for their year-end Inquiry Project.  Students will be using research, writing and presentation skills culminating in a Canadian Museum Open-House on June 22nd.  We are just in the introductory stage of the project, so keep you eyes peeled for more information that should be going home soon!

In Language Arts, we have been working on using the compare/contrast in our informational writing.  We are practicing this format to help us out when it comes time to write the informational report  requirement for our year-end Social Studies inquiry project.  We have also been practicing on-line skills such as learning to cite sources and use strong search terms during research.

Math also continues to be a major focus in the classroom.  We just completed a mini-unit on measurement and have jumped feet first into the study of Experimental Probability.   Students are applying skills learned throughout our multiplication, division, fractions and decimals lessons to calculate the probability of unique, random and related events.  The discussions and evidence of deeper thinking shared by our students is incredible! Keep up the terrific effort!

With the terrific weather this spring, our students have some additional opportunities to strengthn their connection to the outdoors and nature.  Mrs. Isaac has enrolled the school in the May Walk/Bike to School challenge, and all students are encouraged to use their "personal power" to get to and from school each day.  I have also signed up our classroom to participate in David Suzuki's 30 x 30 Challenge which encourages to get outside for 30 minutes each and everyday (in addition to recess!).  Whenever possible, whether it is Power Up, Phys Ed, Science, Art, silent reading or Social Studies, we are going to try to bring our learning outdoors this month!

Whew!  Busy days ahead!
